*** the two names below probably refer to same person. This would have been the Johannes Bentz who arrived on the Loyal Judith in sept 1732. If this is the case, this man's name would most likely have been Johannes Philip Bentz - an entirely different person from Johannes Philip Bentz who arrived in 1738 above the Nancy. But sorting these two out may be a challenge if both went by the same name and both were in York at the same time. We do know that
1732 Philip was 23 years old.
1738 Philip was 27 years old. This puts them within a couple years of the same age -- if they aren't the same person. This needs clarification.****

The place of birth and the name of his parents are not known. At the age of 23 years he, in company with an older brother Michael, aged 27 years, sailed from Notterdam in the ship 'Loyal Judith', with Robert Turpin
as Master. They arrived at Philadelphia and took the oath of allegiance September 25, 1732.
He and his wife, Maria Magdalena, came to York County, then known as Lancaster County. On November 22, 1749 John Bentz of Dover Twp. In the new county of York, was given a Proprietors Warrant for 163 acres of land in Manchester Twp. , now West Manchester Township, along the Little
Conewago Creek, about midway between the Bull Road and the Carlisle Road, adjoining the lands of Martin Bower and Philip Kreber. A portion of this land was deeded October 31,1770, to Stephen Reittinger, later Stephen Reittinger and wife sold this to George Nailor. This tract then joined lands of
Henry Bensil, Philip Kreber, Peter Lind formerly Martin Bower, and Michael Bentz.
John Bentz was a Lutheran and one of the signers of the Charter for Christ Lutheran Church in York, Pa., signed September 1733. He died in 1778 and was buried on his plantation at the north side and quite close to his house, where, in 1941 several tombstones were still standing, but the inscriptions were entirely obliterated. There is no record of the death of his wife. It is quite likely that she was also buried there.

John Michael Bentz, born in Manchester Township, York County September 19, 1735, baptized in Christ Lutheran at York, Pa., October 9, 1735. He married October 27, 1755, Catherine Elizabeth Kauffman, a daughter of Christian Kauffman of the town of Dover, York Co., Pa. The date of her birth is not known. She died young and was buried at the Warrington Meeting House in Warrington Township, York County, Pa.
John Michael Bentz served as a private in the American Revolution in Captain Jacob Beister's Company, Fifth Battallion, York County Associators, commanded by Col. William Rankin, (see Prowell's History, page 263). He was later a private in Captain Reinhart Bott's Company, Fifth Battallion, York Co. Militia from Manchester Township in 1780. (see Prowell's History, page 276)
He lived on his plantation of 74 acres in Manchester, now West Manchester Township, York Co., Pa., it being part of the original Tract granted to his father by the Proprietaries in 1749. Here he died and, like his father, was buried thereon in 1817.

Sept 20 1738 ship NANCY, William Wallace, master, from Rotterdam, but last from Dover in Old England: Johan Philip Bens, aged 27 years. Took the Oath of Allegiance to King George the Second and the Oath of Abjuration of the Jacobite pretensions to the throne, on S 20 1738, at the Court House in Philadelphia. from Pennsylvania German Pioneers, vol. I, pp. 227-231. There is also mentioned a " John Philip Pentz of York took the Sacrament as required by Act of Parliament Ap 9 1765, naturalized Ap 10 1765 at a Supreme Court at Philadelphia.
Footnote 3: This Johan Philip Bens arrived 1738, and the John Philip Pentz of York mentioned in the same paragraph and naturalized in 1765 may be the same man. In either case, the naturalized John Philip PENTZ mentioned confuses the identification of American born John Philip Bentz son of immigrant Johan Bentz.

- Philip Jacob Ob's will was written on May 19, 1758 and probated March 30, 1767, with sons Peter and Jacob Upp as its executors. Jacob's will was probated by "Peter Bentz of Dover Twp—Tavern Keeper, Philip Bentz of York—Town Yeoman, and Michael Hahn of York—Blacksmith.
- "Evidence of the Bentz-Pentz Families in York County [PA] Before the Year 1850." Unfortunately only one of its many entries involves an Ob/Opp/Upp: Agnes, daughter of the late "Nicholas Opp," who married "Philip Pens son of Philip" on Jul. 1, 1766. The marriage took place at "Strayer's Lutheran" in Dover Township. "John Philip Bentz/Pentz" (born 1743, son of Philip and Maria Elizabeth Bentz of York County) married "Agnes Opp/Obb at Salem Luth., Dover Twp."—though here the wedding is dated 1776.
- Michael Hahn married Maria Elizabeth Bentz, daughter of John Philip Bentz and Mary Elizabeth Unknown. - Philip Bentz, Last Will and Testament (n.pub., 26 aug 1780); The Historical Society of York County.
- On 30 October 1765 Jessee purchases 142 3/4 acres from Philip Bentz.
- On 16 June 1766, Jesse and Martha of York County sell 30 acres and 9 perches to George Shaller. This land is part of the acreage purchased from Philip Bentz in 1765.
