Immigrant: Johannes Georg Bentz

They had seven known male children. Two of these boys emigrated with their father aboard the Phoenix in 1749: Ludwig and Jacob. We quickly lose track of Georg, but his two sons move south to the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, where they eventually catch up with two of their younger brothers: Adam and Henry. For this post, we'll be focusing on the first three immigrants. And as this focuses on the Virginia Pence's, we will provide very light treatment here, such that we can separate those immigrants that went to Virginia and those that remained in Pennsylvania.

2 Unless otherwise noted, many of the above notes are taken from Richard Pence's research. Richard's work on the Shenandoah Valley Pence's is well-known. As this study focuses on the Pennsylvania Pence's, we won't dig far into the details of the Pence's once they move south of Pennsylvania.

  1. Hi Derek,

I'm not sure if we corresponded about the DNA project a while back or not... your name sounds familiar.

I am a descendant of Johannes Georg Bentz, through his son, Henry Pence. Richard Pence traced our family back for my (late) father back in the 90's. My tree (taken from my father's research) shows Johannes Georg Bentz as

"Death 29 Oct 1778 in Shenandoah, Virginia, United States"

but I have no citation to confirm that.

As you probably know, Henry and several of his relatives migrated to Champaign County, OH (where he and his wife are buried). Ironically, I was born and raised in Champaign County, IL which is named for that OH county.

    1. Hi Glenn: I can only confirm the male descendants, which I have listed. As I am ultimately trying to tie paternal genealogical lines to yDNA, I've not looked into daughters unless researching a mystery that cannot be solved without it. So, if there were nineteen, and I have only listed seven, the rest would either be females or unproved children. No doubt I probably have the list of "known" daughters somewhere. Let me know if you need these?

As to Johannes Georg's death, I didn't have a vital record proving it, so left it blank. If you have anything solid, let me know.

Question for you: do you have the yDNA haplotype for Johannes Georg that you'd be willing to share with this project? It helps keep the lines nice and clean. A lot of the Pence lines are not related, but nevertheless came to PA from the same area of Germany at around the same time. There are certainly some non-paternal events (adoptions, illigitimates, etc), but just how all these families interacted or related in one form or another is yet to be discovered.

    2. Hi Glenn - would you be able to share the YDNA haplotpe of Johannes Georg Bentz?

  2. One other comment: I have seen several accounts claiming 19 children to Johannes and Anna. Does your research confirm this number?

  3. I have not had my DNA test yet, but my brother did sumbit his to the Ancestry DNA. Let me see what I can find out...

  4. Hi Glenn: Did you get a chance to identify the Y-DNA haplogroup? Would love to add it to the verified line you are from.

  5. Hi Derek,
My brother and I have had our DNA tested via Ancestry. Johann Heinrich Bentz, né Henry Pence (1739-1824) was our 4th great grandfather via our grandmother, Sarah Evelyn PENCE Heisler. I don't know if my brother's DNA would help, but through my direct line, I've yet to come across cousins through a male Pence (at least that I'm aware of). If you think it will help, let me know.

  6. Hi Glenn. Sorry for the long delay in replying. We'd need the YDNA (which AncestryDNA does not provide customers) to prove this out. So you or your brother would need to use something like FamilyTreeDNA or 23andMe. If you've already done this, I'd love to know what the YDNA haplotype is. Most of my DNA cousins show up in AncestryDNA connected to your Johann Heinrich Bentz line, but we just don't exactly know what the YDNA haplotype is.
