1739 Henry Pence of Iggelheim, Germany

Henry Pence/Bentz

Tremont City, Ohio

22 July 1878

(edited to relevant parts)

Mssrs. Editors: You will confer a special favor upon not only the writer, but a very large circle of friends and relatives by giving publicity to the following genealogical record of the Pence family. While on a visit to David Pence, of Madriver Township, the writer obtained from Mr. Pence the family record, which was commenced 118 years ago.

Henry Pence, the father, and Mary Blimly, the mother, emigrated from Germany in their youth. Henry Pence was born A.D. 1740, just 36 years prior to the Declaration of American Independence, and died A.D. 1826, being 86 years old at his death. Mary Pence died A.D. 1829, in her 80th year. The family consisted of nineteen children, two of whom died in infancy, and whose names are not given. The other seventeen grew to man and womanhood, were all married, and together with their wives and husbands were at one time gathered around the family board during the lifetime of both parents. The record is in the German language, but was translated by the Rev. John Pence, as follows, giving their births in their respective order -

George   16 Aug 1766

Jacob     15 Sep 1767

Henry    4 Jan 1768

Abraham 7 Sep 1769

Magdalena   3 Jan 1771

Sussannah   4 Jun 1772

John        15 Jan 1774

Barbary    2 Nov 1775

David        4 Feb 1777

Joseph        26 Sep 1778

Samuel        4 Feb 1780

Anna        10 Oct 1781

Isaac        21 Jul 1784

Elizabeth    22 Feb 1786

Benjamin    25 Apr 1787

Mary        9 Jun 1789

Reuben    28 Jun 1791

The original name was Bentz, but by reasons of the German dialect the name stands as above. I will not trespass upon your indulgence by giving anything additional at present.

Yours truly,

S.H. Wallace

Christian Pence in Franklin Co, PA

Death Records

There are three death records in Franklin Co in the 19th century for similar names to "Christian". This in no way represents the entirety of similar names. They just happened to be names I was researching at the time and found evidence for. These were taken from the files of the genealogical office for Franklin Co, PA.

1. Christopher Pence. Died Dec 1810.

2. Christiana Pence. Died Dec 1815. Executrix: Magdalena

3. Christopher Pentz. Died Apr 1877.

The Line of Christian Pentz I& II of Franklin Co.

The following line was also recorded there:

Christian Pentz I =  Mary Magdalena. Six children recorded: Christian II, Peter, Daniel, Christopher, Christiana, and Catherine.

Their son Christian Pentz II married Mary (some records have a different name for his spouse) and died in March 1833. The had the following children:

1. Rev. John Andrew Pentz

2. Jacob Pentz

3. Magdalena "Nelli" Pentz

4. Henry Pentz

5. William Pentz

6. Christopher Columbus Pentz

7. David Pentz

Online sources do not always list 'David", the sixth child.

Ohio: Early Settlers

Early Settlers of Sprigg Twp, OH

From Caldwell's Illustrated Historical Atlas of Adams County, Ohio

While this blog is focused on PA Pence lines, this is helpful to illustrate early migrations westward as early as 1796.

Re: Sprigg Township (prior to Sprigg being organized):

"Not far from the same time, but perhaps the next year -- 1796, a settlement was made on what is known as "Dutch Run," by a company of Germans who came in a colony and settled some three miles southwest of the present village of Bentonville, on the run that now bears the above name. The names of these colonists were John Bryan, Peter Pence, John Pence, and two lads named William and George Pence, Michael Roush, Philip Roush and George Cook."

A few pages later:

"...Michael Roush, together with Philip Bowman, Peter Pence and John Pence, removed from Pennsylvania at a very early day and settled about three miles west of Bentonville, in what has from that circumstance been since called "The Dutch Settlement."

The Atlas goes on to describe Michael Pence's life, death (drowning while crossing a river) and his children. What is useful is to note that while the previous note says he's from PA, he moved to Ohio from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, where he'd married and raised his family by 1796. This migration path is pretty well trod and proven in Richard Pence's earlier research.

Michael Bentz of Earl Town

Michael Bentz of Earl Town, Pennsylvania -- Possible Founding Father

This Michael's identity is not isolated nor confirmed. There is, however, enough coincidence to drive the current assumption that...

1. This Michael Bentz is the same Michael Pens/Pents/Pentz (or even Mickell Pentes) who sailed from Rotterdam aboard the Loyal Judith at Age 27 in September of 1732.
  • Immigration records noted on Founding Fathers page

2. This is the same Michael Bintz who married Anna Elizabeth Huber in Earl Town, PA in 30 May 1737.
  • New Holland Lutheran Church, Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, US
3. Another church record has him listed as John Michael Bentz, marrying Anna Elizabeth Huber in Lancaster, PA on 10 May 1737.

4. This is the same Michael of Earl Town, PA who is listed as the father of "Michael Bens" on his son's marriage record in 29 Dec 1767 in Berks County to Sybilla/Isabella Frye. This possible son (Michael) was born on 12 May 1738 and later moved to Shenandoah County, Va in the 1770s, had many children, then moved to Adams County, Ohio about 1796 -- he accidentally drowned crossing the Ohio River on 25 Dec 1799.
  • Marriage: Reading (Trinity) Lutheran Church, Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania
5. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Holland, PA Parish Records note Michael Bentz's son "Michael" as born on 12 March 1738, and baptized 7 May 1738. Sponsors were Michael Raun and wife Anna Maria. This date barely conflicts with #4 above. Not material.

6. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Holland, PA Parish Records note Michael Bentz's son "Johannes" as born on 8 March 1740, and baptized 11 May 1740. Sponsors were Thomas Sharp & wife Anna Margaretha.

7. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Holland, PA Parish Records note Michael Bentz's son "Johannes Peter" as born on 28 Nov 1741, and baptized 25 Dec 1741. Sponsors were Johannes Peter Huber & Eva Barbara Scherkin.

8. Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Holland, PA Parish Records note Michael Bentz's daughter "Maria Barbara" as born on 13 Sep 1743, and baptized 2 Oct 1743. Sponsors were Caspar Eckhardt & Anna Barbara Huberin.

Berks County, PA

From a 1958 letter from Mrs. Bausmen, she notes the following: " George Jacob Bentz was a member of the old Lutheran church in 1743 at...
