Dr. John Pentz

There was a doctor in York County, Pennsylvania at the turn of the 19th century named Dr. John Pentz. There's been some question as to his paternity. I believe I have a selection of facts that will help build the case. Long story short, I believe he's the orphaned son of Christian Bentz, son of Weyrich Sr, the immigrant. Here's how I arrived at this probability:

  1. Dr. John Pentz marries Sarah/Sabina Hoke in 1800 in Abbotstown, Adams Co. His parents are NOT named, but hers are. Where are his parents? Absence may mean nothing, but perhaps it's telling.
  2. Dr. John Pentz has a son with the very unique first name of Weyrich. So far, I have seen no other Weyrichs in the Pence/Bentz lines except those stemming from Weyrich Sr.
  3. Dr. John is buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery in 1826. His gravestone marks his birthdate as 8 Aug 1778.
  4. Christian Bentz, son of Weyrich Sr, dies early and his orphan son John is adopted by his brother Weyrich Jr. This orphan is noted as being born in 1778 (9 years old at the time of the adoption of 1787).
  5. Few Bentz/Pentz's are buried in Prospect Hill Cemetery. Most are descendents of Dr. John. However, Weyrich Bentz Jr, son of Weyrich Sr, the immigrant, is buried there.

So we have timing, location, and name alignments. Like most cases where there are no source records to pull from, this answer is not definitive. However, if there are living male descendants out there of Dr. John, their y-DNA could help resolve this mystery. Meanwhile, I will tentatively add Dr. John to Weyrich's line with a noted caveat. This is not good genealogical practice, but then, this blog is about genetic lineages, and some guesses must be made to be proved or disproved.
